The office is located in the regional area and operates directly under the Department of Highways, Ministry of Transport. It was established in 1987 (B.E. 2530), originally named the Sakon Nakhon Highway District. In 1991 (B.E. 2534), it was renamed Highway Office No. 3 (Sakon Nakhon). In 1995 (B.E. 2538), the name was changed to Highway Bureau No. 3 (Sakon Nakhon), and in 2015 (B.E. 2558), it was renamed Highway Office No. 3 (Sakon Nakhon). The office is located at 1900 That Choeng Chum Subdistrict, Mueang District, Sakon Nakhon Province.
